The wrong yoga mat may make you uncomfortable and even hurt your knees. So you want to choose the right one. But how do you know which one is right for you?
As a yoga beginner, you probably aren’t sure what kind of yoga mat to get. You do want one that will last and that won’t slip around during your practice. A good yoga mat should provide enough cushioning and support so that your joints aren’t taking the full brunt of your downward-facing dog.
As yoga becomes more popular, more and more people are buying their own yoga mats. Instead of renting them from studios. In fact, the yoga market is expected to reach $5.3 billion by 2021, which is a lot of mats. Along with this growth, the market is also experiencing a lot of confusion. With so many types of yoga mats to choose from, how do you know what kind is best for your practice? The short answer is that there is no one “right” yoga mat for everyone. The long answer is that there are plenty of options that will work for you. It just takes a little bit of research and experimentation to figure out what you like and what you don’t like.
Choosing The Right Mat
Not all yoga mats are created equal. Mass-market mats are usually made with dense EVA foam. Which is fine for beginners, but not ideal for the serious yogi. They don’t provide enough cushion, and they don’t last. Plus, the cheaper mats tend to be quite heavy. There are a ton of options in the $50-$100 range, and even more in the $200+ range. So it can be hard to know where to start. It’s also easy to get enchanted by gorgeous photos of hand-woven, artisanal mats. But there are more affordable options that offer just as much support and comfort.
